ADSL
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line – a data communications technology that enables faster data transmission over copper telephone lines than a conventional modem can provide.
  MW
Message Wait – is a feature that indicates that an extension has a new voicemail message waiting in their inbox. POE – Power Over Ethernet – describes a system to transmit electrical power, along with data, to remote devices over standard twisted-pair cable in an Ethernet network.
     
CTI
Computer Telephony Integration – is technology that allows interactions on a telephone and a computer to be integrated. CTI includes the integration of all customer contact channels (voice, email, web, fax, etc.) with computer systems.
  QOS
Quality of Service – is the ability to provide different priority to different applications, users, or data flows, or to guarantee a certain level of performance to a data flow.
     
CMS
Call Management Software – CMS is a software package which enables businesses to work more efficiently and productively by storing call logs, group statistics and other features.
  SIP
Session Initiation Protocol – Used for setting up communications sessions on the internet, such as instant messaging, conferencing or telephony.
     
DND
Do Not Disturb – is a call forward option that can be set on each phone when the status of the user is not available to take any calls.
  SIP ALG
Application Layer Gateway – consists of a security component that augments a firewall in a computer network. In order for SIP to work the application has to know about an address/port number combination that allows incoming packets to come through the correct ports to get to the correct destination.
DDI
Direct Dial In – is a feature offered by telephone companies for use with their customers’ telephone systems. As calls are presented to the switch, the number that the caller dialed is given, so the switch can route the call to the desired person or group within the organisation.
  Trunks
Trunks are the phone lines coming into the PBX from the telephone provider.
     
DECT
Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications – DECT is digital wireless technology for cordless telephones, wireless offices and even wireless telephone lines.
  TAPI
Telephony Application Programming Interface – is a Microsoft Windows application, which provides computer telephony integration and enables PC’s running Microsoft Windows to use and integrate with telephone systems.
     
GSM
Global System for Mobile communications – GSM is a cellular network which mobile phones use to communicate with each other.
  VOIP
Voice over Internet Protocol – is the technology used to transmit voice conversations over a data network using the Internet Protocol.
     

ISDN
Integrated Services Digital Network – ISDN has been designed to allow digital transmission of voice and data over ordinary telephone copper wires at connection speeds of 56k.
  VPN
Virtual Private Network – A virtual private network (VPN) is a network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organisation’s network.
     
IP Multicasting
is the delivery of information to a group of destinations simultaneously using the most efficient strategy to deliver the messages over an IP Link or network.
  WIFI
is a wireless network connected to the internet. One or more access points interconnected provides a wireless area where WIFI handsets, games consoles, laptops and computers can connect to the internet.
     
LAN
Local Area Network – a computer network covering a small geographic area, like a home, office, or group of buildings e.g. a school.
  WAN
Wide Area Network – is a computer network that covers a broad area. WANs are used to connect LANs and other types of networks together, so that users and computers in one location can communicate with users and computers in other locations
     
Link Aggregation
AKA Port Trunking – a computer networking term which describes using multiple Ethernet network cables/ports in parallel to increase the link speed beyond the limits of any one single cable or port.
